Keep Your Baby Safe While Travelling
If you read the newspaper daily, you’ll know that car crashes have claimed the lives of several infants. Though you can be the most cautious and careful driver, you still can’t trust the others that are on the road with you. There are just too many irresponsible people out there, and you can’t do anything about it. If you are a parent, travelling can be somewhat stressful for you. After all, your children are your precious cargo and you will do anything to ensure their safety.
To make sure your child is properly restrained while travelling, follow these guidelines:
1. If your child is still too small to sit on their own, you should use rear-facing car seats. If they are a little older, then you can make them face the window. Just make sure that the seatbelts are kept on and that they never sit in the front seat. Train them as early as possible so that they don’t fuss and fret when you travel. Remember, when two cars collide, most of the impact is felt in front. Your child is just not strong enough to hold their necks up or brace themselves for the impact.
2. Never buy a second-hand car seat if you don’t know where it came from. You would have no idea if this seat could have been recalled or if it was involved in a previous accident. Either way, it should not have been used.
3. Newer models of cars use the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) as a means of attaching the car seat. Read the manual and make sure you understand where the hooks go. If you are out in the market for a new car, look for one with LATCH.
4. Set a good example for your children and buckle up as well. They are more likely to mirror your actions when they see you practicing what you preach.
5. Teach your child the proper vehicle etiquette. When you allow them to play inside your car without adult supervision, their movements can set the car moving.
Always think about what could happen to your baby if you were involved in an accident. The thought will always haunt you. Many irresponsible parents have paid the tragic price for mere recklessness. No matter how your child wants to sit with you while you drive, learn how to say no. Though this may be difficult, it must be done with no questions asked.
Before purchasing a car seat, consider your baby’s age, height, weight, use, price, and style. The more expensive seats come with better padding and extra safety features. Think about how much your child is worth? You will then realize that they deserve the best when it comes to safety. Some car seats also come with a stroller. So if you are looking for a good buy, you get a two-for-the-price-of-one deal with this type of seat.
Another way to keep your baby safe with you travel is a baby carrier. These also come in many types but are especially handy when you are family who loves to spend time outdoors. The bottom-line is, safety should always be a concern. Enjoy your trips more knowing that you are better prepared for them.
